Top Floor Apartment Moving TipsMoving to an apartment on the top floor comes with some perks: no overhead footsteps, better heat retention for warmer winters, and more safety from break-ins than ground floor units.  But getting your stuff up several flights of stairs on move in day won’t exactly be a breeze.  Moving to a top floor apartment can be rough unless you follow these simple moving tips.

Streamline your move
If you’re moving to an apartment on the top floor, you should do everything within your power to make your move as easy as possible.  That means doing some planning to streamline all aspects of your move.

The process of streamlining your move to a top-floor apartment starts in your current place.  Before you pack a single box, do some preparatory decluttering.  Go through each room and decide which items should be kept, which should be trashed, and which should be donated to charity.  If you take the time to pare down your belongings, you’ll save yourself valuable time (and money!) on moving day.  Declutter now so you have fewer items to pack and move.

Another way to improve your move is to plan it for a time when your new apartment community will be less busy.  If you move in during regular business hours on a week day, you’re likely to have an easier time moving to a top-floor apartment because there will be fewer obstacles to slow down the process and fewer folks to dodge on elevators and stairwells.

Pack wisely
When you finally get around to packing, try to be as efficient as possible.  The fewer boxes you pack, the fewer you’ll have to lug up several flights of stairs.

For packing tips, look over Apartment Guide’s articles on how to pack.  There’s helpful advice there on how to pack properly, choose moving boxes, and keep delicate items safe in transit.  These articles will help you keep the amount of boxes you pack to a minimum so you can make moving to a top-floor apartment much easier.

Rent the right tools
Moving to any apartment can be physically exhausting, but moving to a top-floor apartment can be even more stressful.  If you have to carry items up stairs or take a long path from the moving truck to your new apartment, rent dollies and rolling furniture-movers to make the move physically easier.  Use them as much as possible to help maintain your energy level for the rest of the day’s tiring activities.

Get moving help
If you’ve got the budget for it, hiring a moving company to take care of moving to a top-floor apartment could be the way to go.  Let someone else handle all the heavy lifting.

Keep in mind that even if your budget prohibits you from hiring movers, you may still be able to afford moving help.  Many rental truck companies can refer you to local companies who provide moving assistance for an hourly fee on your moving day.  These companies can send you one person or several to assist with a self-service move.  If you need extra help moving to a top-floor apartment, a small investment hiring moving helpers could be well worth it.

Make special arrangements
Don’t forget that your new apartment community may be able to assist you with your top-floor apartment move.  Ask your property manager for help making special arrangements, and he or she may be able to clear out a path in the parking lot for you or reserve an elevator for your move.  Property managers are there for assistance, and they’re usually happy to help make move-in day easier.

With some assistance and advance planning, you can get past the pain of moving into a top-floor apartment and enjoy all the bird’s eye benefits of your new home.
